Medical Director of Adult Medicine
Location: Hartford CT
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM; no evenings or weekends
Reports to: Chief Medical Officer
Direct Reports: ~40 staff, including Nurse Manager, Practice Manager, 8-11 providers (mid-levels, optometrists, podiatrists), Infectious Disease Director, Assistant Clinical Director (if applicable)


Position Summary

This is a 50% clinical, 50% administrative leadership role. As the top clinical leader for the department, you will oversee all clinical staff and operations, drive quality and performance improvement initiatives, and lead strategic clinical and business objectives in partnership with the executive team and CMO.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

  • Provide direct and indirect leadership including recruitment, training, supervision, evaluation, and quality oversight of clinical staff

  • Maintain an active patient caseload; providers typically see 14-16 patients per 8-hour shift (Director’s clinical volume may vary)

  • Collaborate on population health initiatives and performance evaluations, including peer review and provider development

  • Serve as a clinical backup during call rotations and emergency coverage

  • Support credentialing and privileging of clinical staff

  • Promote ongoing clinical education and ensure compliance with documentation, coding, and billing standards

  • Foster relationships with clinical partners and specialists

Administrative Leadership

  • Develop and implement service line business plans and clinical operations strategies

  • Oversee scheduling, staffing, space management, and technology use to optimize clinical operations

  • Use data analytics to monitor and improve clinical and operational outcomes

  • Address patient grievances in collaboration with risk management

  • Identify and implement new or improved clinical services

  • Ensure compliance with accreditation and licensing requirements (Joint Commission, NCQA, Department of Public Health)

  • Collaborate on recruitment, onboarding, retention, and engagement of clinical staff

  • Provide clinical input on organizational committees and strategic initiatives

Community Engagement

  • Represent the organization positively in the community through boards, commissions, and public events

  • Maintain deep knowledge of healthcare trends, particularly in the FQHC environment

  • Uphold CHS Core Values, Compliance Program, and policies


Qualifications

Required:

  • MD or DO from accredited medical school and residency in Family or Internal Medicine

  • Board certified in Family or Internal Medicine

  • Active Connecticut medical license

  • Minimum 5 years practicing as a physician

  • CPR certification (or eligible within 90 days)

  • Experience with CPT-4 and ICD-10 coding

  • Minimum 3 years clinical administrative/management experience

Preferred:

  • 7+ years outpatient/ambulatory care experience in multi-provider settings

  • 5+ years senior or director-level management

  • Familiarity with Primary Care Medical Home standards or behavioral health integration principles

  • Experience with socioeconomically diverse populations

  • Knowledge of federally qualified health center (FQHC) operations
